Trustees sought for scheme’s ‘exciting future’

-

SHROPSHIRE Union Canal Society volunteers have made tremendous progress over the summer restoring the 330m dry section of the Montgomery Canal at Crickheath.

Local residents attended an open day in September which was well received and they gained an appreciation of the scale and complexity of the restoration. To compensate for time lost due to Covid restrictions, there are now two work parties per month and this will continue into next year.

The restored channel should be ready for water testing by the end of 2022 and hopefully the Montgomery Canal will be open for navigation to Crickheath in 2023 – a major landmark after four years’ work on the current section.

Attention is now also being given to the next phase of restoration beyond the winding hole at Crickheath. In addition to new volunteers, who are always welcomed, SUCS is seeking new trustees from all backgrounds to guide the society through this exciting future. Visit shropshireunion.org.uk for full details.

Further on down the canal towards Llanymynech, advanced plans are in place to restore School House Bridge, in Long Lane, near Crickheath in 2022. This project is being organised by the Restore the Montgomery Canal! group. Preparatory work began in September 2020.
