Digital changes coming to the canals

-

PUBLIC Wi-Fi will be installed at the Crinan and Caledonian sea locks by the end of the year.

The development of a new Scottish Canals website is being put out to tender and plans for a new digital platform to house the organisation’s data and information is being scoped out with the aim to have a new system live during 2022-23.

During 2019 telemetry equipment was installed in six of the remote reservoirs that feed the Crinan Canal and the canal basins at Ardrishaig and Crinan. This allows Sottish Canals to remotely monitor water levels. Telemetry works through sensors measuring water flows and levels remotely and transmits the data to wherever it is required.

In spring this year, 15 telemetry sites were installed along the Union Canal for monitoring and to provide an alarm system should water levels in the canal rapidly increase or decrease.

Scottish Canals is continuing to work on the use of telemetry along the canals, including finding solutions for those areas of the canals not wellplaced for internet connections.
