January 9

IWA Chester & Merseyside Branch: Waterway walk starts alongside Budworth Mere (lake) then through Marbury Country Park to Neumann’s Flash before returning via the Trent & Mersey Canal towpath. All the paths are well used and the walk is excellent for dogs. Meet at 10.15 for 10.30am start, finishing at parking place about 1.30pm. Anyone wishing to take part should email derek.smith@waterways.org. uk by the Saturday evening before the walk.

Trent & Mersey Canal Society: The changing scene and history of the Shropshire Union Canal by Ian Wilson. The Red Bull Hotel, Church Lawton, Stokeon-Trent S17 3AJ, next to Lock 43 on the Trent & Mersey Canal. 7.30 for 8pm start. Free event, non-members welcome. January 26
