Mapping out the journeys

-

AS A regular reader of Towpath Talk, may I say how much there is to interest this non-boating reader.

Please keep up the good work, however may I please be allowed to make a suggestion.

Your monthly Towpath Journey into a different canal each issue has a little plan showing where the canal is located. Often there is no possible confusion as to the canal’s location but the plan relative to the recent Huddersfield Narrow Canal (Journey, Issue 193, November) was, with respect, worse than useless.

The two ends of the canal were mentioned in the text; neither appeared on the plan. And with other canals in the North West around Manchester also appearing in the plan, every canal by blue lines, to those who do not know that area or the particular canal, it was useless. It was to me.

My suggestion: Is it not possible for the other canals on the plan to remain as blue lines but the particular canal to be in a different colour, perhaps red? This would be of real help to those (like me) who know certain parts of the country well but are not so well informed concerning others.

I hope you feel this suggestion is helpful. I am sure it would be generally appreciated were you able to do this. John T Rhead Bromsgrove, West Midlands

Editor: Thanks to John for his observations which we will bear in mind with future maps.
