Lock gates can open due to lack of pressure

- Sam Kyle By email

ON READING an article (Talkback, Issue 193, November) where Kevin Thomas sends in a photo of an open lock titled ‘Who left the lock open?’, I feel it necessary to point out as a boater that has used those locks many times, that along that particular stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal near Devizes there are locks that open themselves when the lock is full due to lack of pressure to keep the lock gates closed.

What I was more concerned about was the way Mr Thomas presumed and questioned why boaters would leave lock gates open and also went as far as to question whether this is their laziness, lapse of attention or arrogance.
