Accidents will happen

Barge Beagle – sniffing out good finds for crews with canines

AS WE begin to think about the start of the boating season and replenishing supplies and equipment perhaps now is the best time to consider your pet’s well-being.

No matter how careful we may be, it is inevitable that accidents will happen and while we may not be able to deal with major trauma it is within the capabilities of most to administer first aid until the aid of a professional can be called upon.

A pet’s first aid kit (available online or in dedicated pet stores) is a wise investment and can be easily customised and replenished; when you discover a favourite item or brand, simply add that to the kit – for instance, we always keep a small tub of wound powder for minor cuts and grazes.

Alternatively, make up your own first aid kit using an airtight food container. Whichever you choose, ensure the lid of the first aid kit is tight fitting and cannot be reached by your pet or young children especially if medicines are stored inside.

Your dog’s first aid kit should contain: antiseptic wipes, bandages, blunt-ended scissors, cotton wool, tweezers, wound dressing, self- adhesive tape, vinyl gloves, foil blanket, a towel and a blanket ( both of which can double up for use as a stretcher). You may also like to add an instruction book/guide to administering basic first aid.

It is important to consider having your dog insured as an unforeseen accident or illness can quickly leave you out of pocket. If you spend some time shopping around you may discover insurance to be more reasonable than first thought. Don’t forget to keep at hand your dog’s veterinary records and contact details.

If you are a constant cruiser or away for long spells and need a vet, finding one is relatively easy either by word of mouth or by checking out the internet.

While away cruising for three months we had to put this into practice when Barge Beagle ripped a claw on a metal footbridge. In just a matter of minutes we had located the nearest available vet and arranged an emergency out-ofhours appointment.

Barge Beagle has an underthe-steps drawer dedicated to first aid items; one side houses his humans’ first aid kit, the other his own.

There is also a fully charged torch, replacement collar, lead and ID tag, as well as a supply of the all-important poo bags! While being prepared will not prevent accidents it may well offer some peace of mind when out and about on the cut!
