Try your hand at creative ropecraft
CRAFTING has become one of the nation’s most favourite pastimes so it comes as no surprise that Creative Ropecraft by Stuart Grainger is now available in a fifth edition.
This version has been updated to contain a foreword by Des Pawson (co-founder of the International Guild of Knot Tyers) and for the first time, colourful photographs depicting completed projects.
It begins with the basics, detailing tooling which may be needed although your hands alone will do fine for the majority, meaning one can quickly get started without a huge initial outlay. The different types of rope, twine, practical nautical knots and splicing are covered, before moving on to more elaborate subject matter including the monkey’s fist, Turk’s head, ocean plait and many more.
There are some lavish highly detailed drawings to illustrate the step-bystep instructions. Highly acclaimed by many knotting aficionados these are, without doubt, works of art in their own right.
The rear of the book comprises a collection of projects to try your hand at. These include items such as cuff links, lanyards and rope edged trays – plenty enough diversity to whet the appetite of both the beginner and experienced ropeworker. There is even a pattern for a hammock so you can relax in your own handiwork and ponder over your next project.
I found this book an informative read as well as a practical guide. The brief historical insights into the world of knots, plaits, hitches and bends, their names and uses – for me, introduced a whole new world. An excellent hobby craft book and a great gift item.
