Seagull Trust Cruises need you

-

THE Seagull Trust is making an urgent call for volunteers. The Ratho-based branch, on the Union Canal, has restarted its boat trips for people but is struggling to provide the pre-Covid level of service as, after two years of closure, some volunteers have moved on.

As bookings increase, the organisation wants to return to its usual seven-day operation but needs volunteers to step forward to run a full service.

While current trips are safe for crew and clients, with the usual safety measures in place, chairman David Mieras explained: “We know many have missed coming out with us, so we want to meet that demand. We also look forward to greeting new organisations, groups or individuals who would benefit from joining us.”

The charity relies entirely on donations to cover costs and operates solely using trained volunteers. “It’s an important social service but it’s also enjoyable – meeting people and learning new skills on our lovely canal,” added David.

Seagull Trust provides free barge trips for the elderly and anyone with special needs on board fully accessible boats suitable for wheelchairs. The charity has been operating since 1978, initially from Ratho and over the years has expanded to three other bases in Kirkintilloch, Falkirk and Inverness.
