Raising awareness of waterway code

-

I WAS reading the snippet in Towpath Talk on page 85 (Talkback, Issue 200, June 2022) titled ‘Advice for boaters when passing anglers’.

This was a little surprising, having been involved at times working with users of the canal to provide feedback on publication of various waterway codes and users guides, that awareness of the

Canal & River Trust (document 44024) Waterway Code for Anglers and Boaters seems lacking?

Under the section Boats with Engines, the document states: “When passing anglers, keep to the centre of the channel, reduce wash, but maintain a steady pace.”

Locally, many angling clubs insist that we treat all anglers the same, stay in the middle and don’t slow down.

This is because during fishing matches, it could be advantageous to specific anglers to move over or slow down when fish swim in front of a vessel.

Perhaps awareness of documents like this needs to be raised and more copies made available? Robin Telkman By email
