Plans for boatyard redevelopment get green light

CHORLEY Council has approved plans for the redevelopment of a canalside site which includes the Botany Bay Boatyard.

The yard is on the offside of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal near Bridge 78a and is known for the large onsite crane that is used to lift boats into and out of the water.

Plans for the site owned by Shaun Smith include 10 mixed-use industrial units including a cafe or sandwich shop. The boatyard and the units will have car and motorcycle parking plus additional spaces for the adjacent Lock and Quay pub.

Ten objections were received and several councillors expressed regret that the Boatel party boat was not included in the plans for the site. It will have to move from the base which it has occupied for many years.
