Community volunteers pass 3000-hour milestone

-

UPPERMILL Community Action Network (UCAN) volunteers recently passed the milestone of 3000 voluntary hours since the group started at the end of 2015.

Members are proud of this achievement which most certainly includes the clear commitment by local people, businesses and visitors to keeping the canalside village litterfree, valuing the open space to walk, cycle or to sit, and protecting the wildlife.

The first task of the morning at a recent work party focused on tackling the low overhanging trees and vegetation along the towpath that runs alongside the Huddersfield Narrow Canal in Uppermill.

As always, the cleared branches were placed into woodpiles to create a habitat and homes for the wildlife to thrive.

A further activity included tending the various flower beds along the towpath.

The volunteers focused mainly on clearing dead leaves and flower stems, leaving several of the stems with seed heads for birds to enjoy in the autumn.

As always, there was a regular litter pick, the amount of litter alongside the canal towpath having decreased significantly over the years.
