What? An in­creas­ingly pop­u­lar en­durance sport which mixes open wa­ter swim­ming with trail run­ning.

How? All you need is a wet­suit and some hand pad­dles. Com­peti­tors run in twos for safety, and must carry all their own gear.

Why? Swim­run­ning’s fu­sion of the two dis­ci­plines taxes a va­ri­ety of en­ergy sys­tems and near enough ev­ery mus­cle in the body, mak­ing it a com­plete test of fit­ness. By us­ing hand pad­dles and a leg float when swim­ming, the ef­fort is iso­lated into your up­per body, al­low­ing your legs to rest be­fore the next run­ning sec­tion. If you’re look­ing for a new chal­lenge over the warmer months, swim­run­ning is def­i­nitely one to con­sider.
