An­drew Davies isn’t the only run­ner to ef­fec­tively com­bine trails with suc­cess­ful road marathon run­ning.

The Scot fin­ished ahead of An­drew Davies at the 2018 Com­mon­wealth Games marathon, won this year’s Jungfrau Marathon race, and was sec­ond in the Sierre-Zi­nal moun­tain race be­hind Kil­ian Jor­net.

For­mer Euro­pean 10,000m cham­pion Pavey has trained on trails through­out her long ca­reer, which has in­cluded a 2hr 28min marathon. She lists the Grand Western Canal as one of her favourite routes.

LILY PAR­TRIDGE

Bri­tain’s top per­former at this year’s Lon­don Marathon did much of her build-up on canal tow­paths, play­ing fields and in her lo­cal woods. “It builds your strength and takes the stress off your legs,” she says.

Sixth in this year’s Euro­pean Cham­pi­onships marathon in 2hr 28min 7sec, the Swiss run­ner is a for­mer win­ner of the World Long Dis­tance Moun­tain Run­ning Cham­pi­onships and Euro­pean Moun­tain Run­ning Cham­pi­onships.
