ATHLETES WHO TRAIN ON TRAILS
Andrew Davies isn’t the only runner to effectively combine trails with successful road marathon running.
The Scot finished ahead of Andrew Davies at the 2018 Commonwealth Games marathon, won this year’s Jungfrau Marathon race, and was second in the Sierre-Zinal mountain race behind Kilian Jornet.
Former European 10,000m champion Pavey has trained on trails throughout her long career, which has included a 2hr 28min marathon. She lists the Grand Western Canal as one of her favourite routes.
Britain’s top performer at this year’s London Marathon did much of her build-up on canal towpaths, playing fields and in her local woods. “It builds your strength and takes the stress off your legs,” she says.
Sixth in this year’s European Championships marathon in 2hr 28min 7sec, the Swiss runner is a former winner of the World Long Distance Mountain Running Championships and European Mountain Running Championships.
