Speyside Way, Cairngorms

Trail Running (UK) - - Routes - Ian Stewart, TrailRunningScotland.com

The Speyside Way is one of Scotland’s lesser known Great Trails and packs a whole lot more variety than just being a riverside trail. It runs for 65 miles between the awesome mountain base camp of Aviemore and Buckpool harbour in Buckie, with an additional spur to Tomintoul making 80 miles in total. This section from Aviemore to Grantown-on-Spey has all the elements that make this a great running trail: excellent underfoot conditions, superb scenery and plenty of interest along the way – with the hulking mass of the Cairngorm mountains as a backdrop the whole way. Leaving Aviemore on a fast, hard-packed track, you get amazing views of the high plateau of the Cairngorms behind you before crossing the Spey and heading into the forest village of Nethy Bridge. Refuel here before the final section, which takes you along the old highland railway line beside the river to Grantown.
