Mammut Trovat High GTX

£165 / 1794g (pair, size 11)

very supportive; leather upper; minimal stitching; toe box rand; aggressive lugs

lower weight and better leather are available in others

Velour leather is used here, rather than the more durable full-grain leather of some other boots; but there is little stitching, which is great. Inside there's a Gore-Tex waterproof lining; outside you get a rubber rand at the toe, but not all the way round the boot. The ankle cuff is higher and more supportive, and the sole is stiffer than lower-priced boots. 4/5

Sizes for men are 7-12 and sizes for women are 4-8½, so it is not quite the widest size range you can get. The boot is a good medium fit, with the ankle cuff being higher than others; but it still fits well. The lacing extends a little further towards the toe than some to allow a closer fit in this area. 5/5

This is very comfortable on the foot but it is heavier than some boots and stiffer, so in a shop it may feel less appealing. But on rougher terrain all that support from the high ankle cuff and stiffer sole makes it more comfortable. It is still fine on moorland terrain; but lighter, softer boots are more comfortable on easier ground. 5/5

For the mixed ground found on British hills and mountains this is a great all-rounder, being supportive enough for rockier terrain yet still comfy enough for moorland walks. The sole is great for grip on mud and loose scree, and the boot feels precise when scrambling. However a boot that uses full-grain leather or that features a full rand may be more durable for really hard users in the long term. 4/5

You don’t get much better performance if you pay more, which makes this good value for what it offers. 4/5

For the price this offers excellent all-round hill and mountain performance, but others have long-term 4.4/5 durability benefits.
