A BRIEF HISTORY OF DEUTER
1898 Hans Deuter founds the company in Augsburg-Oberhausen, supplying the Bavarian Royal Mail with mailbags and post sacks.
1919 Hans Deuter begins manufacturing suitcases, backpacks, tents and truck canopies and exhibits at Oktober-fest for the first time.
1938 Anderl Heckmair makes the first ascent of the north face of the Eiger with Ludwig Vörg, Fritz Kasparek, Heinrich Harrer and a Deuter backpack.
1939 With the outbreak of war, all equipment and tent production is taken over for the armed forces. Deuter refer to this as its ‘Dark Years’.
1953 Deuter equips Hermann Buhl’s expedition to Nanga Parbat (8125 m) with backpacks, bags and tents, including the proven Tauern backpacks. In the following years, the company continues to equip expeditions, using the feedback to develop new products.
1968 Deuter produces the first range of packs made from nylon, a material that becomes the standard fabric for rucksacks.
1985 The first Aircomfort packs with a mesh back system are created, revolutionising the rucksack market.
1988 Mountaineer Peter Habeler enrols as a technical advisor at Deuter.
1999 The classic Aircomfort Futura rucksack is born.
2002 The Aircomfort carry system is used on the popular multifunctional AC Lite series.
2008 Deuter begins working with Bluesign to implement its standard for sustainable textile production, eliminating harmful substances from the manufacturing process and setting standards for environmentally friendly production.
2011 Deuter cements its commitment to higher standards by joining the Fair Wear Foundation.
2015 Deuter signs up to the Partnership for Sustainable Textiles and the Responsible Down Standard schemes.
