Maggots with that, Sir?

What's the worst mountain snack you've ever eaten? You said…

David Chapman I took my lad up his first mountain this summer. We had a brilliant time in the Lake District but I don't think either of us will forget the steak pie that was warm, moist and squashed in the bottom of my rucksack. Watching him eat it was sooo funny. Matt Costello Squashed bananas. Nick Harbour I dropped a flapjack on the Llanberis Path once. I invoked the five-second rule. It was fine after a bit of a dusting off. Andy Piper Dry Alpen after running out of food on my DofE expedition. I now realise that's why I was so dehydrated! Jessica Broom I was running low on energy and feeling a bit wobbly, so I pulled out my emergency chewy bar only to realise I'd picked up a diet one by mistake – ‘only 60 calories’. I don't recall ever cursing a snack for that reason before or since! Tony Abbott The charcuterie on Corsica was not too tasty, as was the goat's cheese with added maggots for protein. I was once so short of water on the Glyders that I licked the cloud off of my fleece and rocks. Charlotte Akam Half-cooked rice in the pouring rain after my Jetboil refused to cooperate. Simon Cawthorne I once had some bacon ‘fried’ in washing up liquid after a mix-up with identical containers. Sarah Jackson Some kind of unflavoured gel in a toothpaste tube that was handed out on a trail race – it was like wallpaper paste and I'm convinced someone had replaced the tube's ingredients with lube instead. Simon Small A beetroot power shot... within 10 minutes it only shot one way... OUT! Behind that rock was like a scene out of the movie Alien! Peter Willis I carried my flask of tea to the top, and realised I'd put no sugar in it... From personal experience Kendal Mint bars and tea is AWFUL. Gill Gillybean Nott Special K bar after leaving it in a side pocket of my rucksack on a winter's day hike! It was so solid, biting into it broke one of my teeth! Andrew Steele Pot Noodle with cold water. Racheal Lee Scotch egg! It travelled five hours the day before in my pack on the way to the mountain and then for another four hours while I went climbing – bad news. Helen Matthews Some Soreen that had been in my rucksack for a few weeks; the malt loaf was okay but it took me ages to get rid of the taste of rancid butter!
