NY318256 From the car park a small path heads directly uphill over tree roots, with Blease Gill beck on its right. It emerges at the foot of open fell, with the deep hollow of Blease Gill ahead (a wild way up Blencathra in its own right). Turn right, on a path above the fell foot wall. After 1km you cross the next deep little hollow, Gate Gill.

NY324262 Immediately across the stream, a path sets off steeply up the broad base of Hall’s Fell. At the 600m contour the slope levels off at the start of the scrambly ridgeline. Stay close to the crest, up to the sudden arrival at Blencathra summit.

NY323277 Head down east on a wide path with some engineered zigzags. A path forks off left down to Scales Tarn, but it's better to stay high, along the tops of the drops into Doddick Gill and Scales Beck. Where the Scales Fell ridgeline levels off, turn left and head straight down grassy slopes to the outflow of Scales Tarn.

NY329281 A rugged path heads down to the left of the outflow stream. As the slope eases slightly, a good path heads out to the right, along the steep side of the deep Glenderamackin valley.

NY341278 As the river below bends away left, take the upper fork, to arrive on the ridgeline of Scales Fell just up to the west of the saddle point that's the head of Mousthwaite Comb. Turn right, around the rim of the combe, on a path which then zigzags down to right of Mousthwaite Comb's deep hollow.

NY344273 About halfway down the slope, take the path slanting down to the right, soon with a wall below it. Keep heading along the foot of the hill, above the wall at the top of cultivated fields. Pass above Scales, staying on the contouring path above the wall. Soon comes the dip into the hollowed-out bed of Scales Beck; here there's a scrambling moment – if the rocks are icy the assisting chain may be appreciated.

NY336267 Continue above the fell wall to the crossing of Gategill (Point 2). Here a gate lets you onto a path descending to the right of the stream, to reach a lane above Threlkeld. Turn right, down into the village, and keep ahead past the two pubs. Just after crossing a stream, a path between houses leads up to the right to the car park.
