Highlander Ben Nevis 65

+ price; average weight; two side zipped pockets; adjustable back length; large capacity

the floating lid design is not ideal – This pack has all the features of a classic British backpacking sack. So you get 65 litres in a two-compartment design with top and base access. But you also get a floating lid; side compression straps with quick-release buckles; wand pockets; zipped side pockets and a front stretch stash pocket. All that for 2015g makes this a very attractive option at first glance. 4/5

This comes in a unisex design with no real back sizing options – other than the ability to adjust the back length by raising the shoulder straps along vertical alloy bars. Normally there are options to rethread the top tensioning straps, but not here. On me, the fit was okay, but it's unlikely to work for everyone. 4/5

Lots of soft padding and reasonable airflow are appealing, but the back system is less supportive than higher-priced packs. It's comfortable enough, but not as stable or well-fitting as the best packs. For general users this is comfortable enough and it's not too heavy. But for bigger loads and more regular trips you'd want more comfort. 4/5

The general layout of packing options is great, but there is one niggle. The floating lid does not have an attachment point in the centre, and no baffle connecting it to the body, so water can creep under it. But you do get a good drawcord closure to the main compartment. The pockets are great and the side compression straps are ideal for stashing tent poles or trekking poles when you're on the move. 4/5

The price is excellent for what you get – a few minor niggles, but fine for basic usage. 5/5

Higher-priced sacks are definitely better for regular use, but if you are on a tight budget this is an excellent option. 4.2/5
