Walking the Snowdonia Way

- Alex Kendall Review by Hannah James

If you’re in search of a week's worth of mountain adventure this handy little book is the guide for you. Starting in Machynlleth in the south of Snowdonia National Park, you’ll be guided north through the centre of the park to Conwy on the coast, taking in the beautiful countryside, woods and lakes – and of course stunning mountain vistas. Kendall offers a low-level walk alongside a separate ‘mountain route’ for those who want to gain some elevation along the way. This book has something for everyone; if you want to climb Snowdon you can choose to do so, along with Moel Siabod, the Glyders and Carnedd Gwenllian. The lower path runs along the base of these mountains, so you will still get to enjoy them from below. For most of the journey, both routes meet for the same overnight stops, allowing you to chop and change to the other path depending on how you feel the next day. Each day is described in detail with the addition of an OS 1:50,000 map. It may be a good idea (especially for the mountain routes) to take along a 1;25,000 map. Tables break down each day with starting points and destinations, distance, ascent and estimates of how long it will take you to complete. It is also packed full of incredibly interesting and useful information about the National Park, including bus timetables, important numbers, accommodation information as well as history, myth and geology facts. There’s certainly enough packed into this little guide to instil excitement and eagerness to get out there and try it.
