Trail (UK)

WELCOME TO FEBRUARY 2018

- Simon Ingram, editor (Twitter @MrSimonIngram)

Snow is always a shock when it comes, isn’t it? We’ve had the whole year to get used to the idea that at some point it probably will snow. And then, when it does, the country goes into a kind of spasm. Papers start saying things like ‘Arctic Death Blast to Last 2 Days (FOUR inches of SNOW to fall!)’, cars start moving around the roads like foals taking their first steps and people start moaning about snow as if it’s a daily hardship. I’ll say this, though: it’s darn pretty. And if you’re in the habit of getting up the hills in snow – of any size – you can suddenly feel the landscape grow beneath you. If you want gentle this winter, we’ve got it: go coastal, go valley, go mini-mountain. Or if you want to kick it up on spikier peaks, get those skills, order your ice axe and crampons – and go epic! You can have it all here in Britain, and it’s all here in Trail. Stay safe! And viva winter.
