Why layering works in winter

-

QWhat’s the best way to dress for a day that could have snow, wind, rain – the whole winter weather package? Dave Seaton, via email

Trail says layers! We all hear it said all the time, but layering really is the way to ensure you are sorted for all conditions. These days there are many layers that claim to ‘do it all’ – but with the frequent changes of weather, the variance of temperature with altitude and your own physical exertions it’s a big ask.

Layering enables precise tailoring of your insulation to suit the conditions – so consider: ■ Base layers x 2 (high-wicking merino or synthetic; one zipped) ■ Mid layer (light Polartec fleece or equivalent, preferably with a zip)

■ Insulated layer (down or synthetic-fill jacket large enough to overlayer)

■ Windproof shell (light soft shell or similar, large enough to overlayer)

■ Waterproof shell (essential for foul weather, large enough to overlayer everything else you are wearing in extreme conditions)
