We are all fighting over...

DORRIGO 3D BRITISH ISLES RELIEF MAP £50

-

We love maps – they scream of potential adventure. But if we have one criticism, they can be a little flat. Not this one, though! The Dorrigo map is printed onto a plastic base which has been custom-moulded to show all the hills, mountains and sundry lumps and bumps in 3D relief. The scale is 1:1,400,000 which makes it less than ideal for navigating. Actually, scratch that; this map is entirely unsuitable for navigating, not least because it doesn’t fold. Also, the vertical dimensions of the peaks are not to scale; their heights have been exaggerated for the purpose of making them stand out. But this map is one to be felt as much as looked at – just running your fingers over it and feeling all the ups and downs crammed into our islands is a joy. It’s available from the Ordnance Survey online shop where, for an extra £40, you can get it mounted and framed, or just mounted for an extra £30 so you can frame it yourself. And while you’re there, check out the similar maps of the Lake District or the West Highlands. Yes, there’s an element of geography classroom about them, but we’ve always felt maps are as much a work of art as a navigation tool and, with the addition of a little bit of sculpture, these prove it.
