UK MOUNTAIN PHOTO OF THE YEAR 2017
SECOND PLACE GLEN SUMNER GLEN COE, CENTRAL HIGHLANDS
“This shot is from last February on a 19-hour day of photography! My photo buddy Johnny Baird and I set off from Fort William at 4.30am to Rannoch Moor for some dawn shooting in the snow, then on up to the ski lifts for a clamber about. After lunch we climbed up to the Aonach Eagach ridge for some sunset panoramas of the Three Sisters.
“After dark I thought I would try for some car trails along the A82, so I took two-minute exposures. It took several attempts to get the lights; inevitably when you try to do something like this the road goes quiet! Later in the lightroom I merged two of these shots together into a panorama. As they were only two images, I needed to fix the perspective in Photoshop, but that was much later! After slithering down we noticed a green tinge in the sky, so we raced off to Rannoch Moor once more to shoot the Northern Lights over Lochan na h-Achlaise, before returning bleary eyed to Fort William!”
