EXPERT TIPS
Make sure you’ve fitted your crampons to your boots before you set off – the last thing you want to be doing is messing with straps and screwdrivers with cold hands and on ground dodgy enough to make you want them on.
Carry your crampons in your pack in a rugged pouch. You don’t want those spikes ripping a shell or insulated layer.
If a crampon has a clip at the back (usually a C2 spec) ensure your boot has the corresponding ledge at the heel to accommodate it. This is a good clue to the compatibility.
Carry axes in the side compression straps of your rucksack or between your shoulders in the back system – this keeps the pick out of harm’s way.
