EDDINGTONS BANANA ARMOUR £5.50
USED BY healthy snack activist and deputy editor Jenna Maryniak
USED FOR 5 months
Love bananas? Hate finding an inedible mushy mess in your rucksack at lunchtime? Or worse still, a banana skin that you meant to carefully dispose of off the hill, but instead found three weeks later in your lid pocket?! These brilliantly named (for anyone who has an appreciation of ’80s music) Banana Armours are not a new idea, they’ve been around a while – but I’d never considered getting one for hiking. Why I do not know, as they’ve long been a favourite of endurance athletes, and as I’ve discovered are the best way to preserve your healthy snack from being bashed about
in a
backpack. Each banana generally contains about 30g of carbohydrate for energy, but importantly they are full of proven good stuff for your heart, blood pressure and cholesterol. Plus, if you get an itchy insect bite, rubbing the inside of the skin on the area reduces irritation.
The Banana Armour is larger than your average banana (24cm long), but it’s designed that way to fit most sizes, which it does – apart from the very largest. It can also be used to stash the skin until you get to a bin, and is robust enough to be shoehorned into your rucksack if required.
VERDICT
An essential accessory for the banana-loving hiker, now that’s ‘Really Saying Something’!
