WHAT’S THAT BIT FOR?

- Russell Marshall, via email

QWhat is the purpose of the elasticated loops I have on two fingers of my walking gloves?

A number of full-on winter gloves feature a single loop on the outside of two of the fingers and these are for... hanging the gloves.

These often-elasticated bands, otherwise known as carabiner loops, are usually found on the ring or little finger of each glove. The idea is by hanging the gloves from these loops, such that the finger-tips are left facing, up eliminates the risk of each glove filling with rainwater or snow as they might if tethered from the wrist.

So there you have it. What a delightfully ingenious little invention, we say!
