Should I pack a thermal blanket?
QWould Tral recommend carrying a thermal blanket as part of a first aid kit?
In short, yes. If not just for personal emergency use, but in case you happen upon a compromised walker on the hill. A thermal blanket will provide protection from the wind and rain, and help prevent heat loss. It’s important to use the right insulation and employ it correctly though. Emergency thermal blankets work best when the person in need of it is still warm or capable of moving. This is because if somebody is fully hypothermic but unable to move and generate body heat, there is a risk the blanket would only act to trap in cold body temperatures.
Lifesystems’ Heatshield Thermal Blanket (pictured), for example, can be wrapped around a person’s body and has heat reflective properties that allow the wearer to retain up to 90% of radiated body heat.
