WHAT’S IT LIKE?
“Khuiten is a great mountain, the highest in Mongolia. It is situated at the far western end of the country close to where it joins Russia and China. Although a similar height to some big Alpine peaks, it is different. It’s colder, but more significantly is extremely remote. You have to trek to a base camp and carry your food and equipment up the Potanin Glacier to a high camp for a start.”
ANYTHING SPECIAL I NEED TO KNOW?
“Khuiten is both colder and more remote than the Alps. Insulated B3 boots are the minimum requirement and a mid-weight down jacket is often worn on summit day. It is also worth bringing an indestructible foam mat as a punctured inflatable one is a misery sleeping on ice. For cooking, multi-fuel stoves burning petrol are the only option.”
WHAT WILL IT COST?
KE’s Khuiten ascent costs around £2800 without flights and £3800 with flights.
