Best no-mess hill lunch

Trail (UK) - - CONTENTS -

QCan you recommend an on-the-go lunch option that doesn’t need to be cooked on a stove and won’t end up as a huge mess in my rucksack? Oliver Hutton, via Facebook

Trail says We’ve all been there… You’re on the hill, you’ve struggled to the summit and, having worked up an appetite Henry VIII would have been proud of, you reach into your bag, salivating for that delicious sarnie you lovingly made at home, only to pull out an emphatically deconstructed mess of squashed bread and mashed fillings. Is it even recognisable as a sandwich any more? Probably not.

To solve this mountain luncheon quagmire, simply make your sarnie of choice as usual but, before bagging it up, pop it into a toastie machine and grill it. Not only does this method instantly improve the taste of any given sandwich – fact – it also clamps the edges of the sarnie together to encase the fillings and prevent any of the aforementioned spillages. The toastie might not still be warm by the time you get around to eating it on the summit, but there’s a much better chance of it still being in one piece!
