5 THINGS TO DO NOW...

-

DISCOVER ISLANDS IN THE CLOUDS

1 Unlike our Out There photo winners (p22) this month, you don’t have to journey all the way to Poland to experience a cloud inversion. Autumn and early winter is one of the best times to get above the clouds here in the UK’s mountains, when the conditions are right for temperature inversions, especially early in the morning. So before the full force of winter hits, go check out one of nature’s most spectacular phenomenon!

SHARE THE LOVE

2 Many of us are affected by the onset of shorter days and the lack of sunlight on our usually cheery dispositions, so remind yourself that the world is, in fact, a wonderful place by taking a moment to read the #EverestAnywhere challenger tributes to their hillwalking companions (p52), and show a little love to the best hillwalking buddies in your life this month. Emoticons encouraged. But just this once...

GO TO EXTREMES

3 Whether it’s the very limits of your personal ability, or journeying to the outer limits of our nation, this issue is inspired by extremes. Whether you get that tingle of excitement at the possibilities impressively demonstrated by awesome alpinist Liv Sansoz sleeping on a rock slab with her feet dangling into the abyss (p12), or you discover the secret beauty on our island’s outermost reaches in the Hebrides (p26) and Worm’s Head on the Gower (p60), amazing adventures await…

GET BAGGING

4 Mountains, Everests, trig points… there’s something about target-setting which motivates us to greater experiences in life. So be inspired by this month’s dreamy Lakeland tarn-hunting feature (p34), and get bagging!

RESPECT THE MOUNTAIN

5 There’s something about the mountains that unleashes the thrill-seeker in us. It’s the one place where we break out of the health and safety bubble and the humdrum of everyday routine. But while a little managed risk and adrenaline boost is good for the soul, take a leaf out of our writing competition winner’s hard-earned lesson this month (p24) and never forget – always respect the mountain.
