Pencil in an overnight bothy trip

You really can’t beat a bothy in winter. Yes, they can be cold and the invariably old (and always creepy) remote buildings don’t have many facilities. And they are pretty dark. But something about these places just screams to be enjoyed during the chillier, more atmospheric seasons of the year. We can’t explain it, we just know you can’t beat it. There are over 100 bothies in the UK hills, all of which are open and free to use. There’s always a chance the bothy will have occupants already, so make sure you pack gear accordingly – perhaps even a tent just in case you can’t get in. Enjoy, and follow the bothy code, which you can find, along with bothy locations, at www.mountainbothies.org.uk
