Safety and mines

-

Only go with people experienced in the slate mines, in groups of at least three.

Safety helmets are essential whenever entering a mine to protect from rockfall.

A powerful headtorch with spare batteries is a essential to illuminate hazards and keep your hands free.

Wear sturdy, waterproof boots and clothing to minimise the chance of injury.

Make sure to remember your entry point and all possible exit routes.

Ensure someone knows where you are going and when you expect to be back.

Avoid investigating Coniston’s copper mines. They are much more dangerous than the slate mines, as they contain weak floors supported by timber poles rotted by years of exposure to damp. The copper mines also contain gaping shafts more than 100ft deep and water pools that can be over 1500ft in depth.
