For budget grip on level paths with thin snow cover...

A coil of 1mm diameter metal wire provides the grip across the base of the foot, and this is held in place with a rubber frame. The coil extends 3mm from the rubber frame, so in effect you have lots of spikes that are 3mm deep, which is relatively shallow. But the rubber frame is not the most durable design. They work well on level paths with the thinnest of snow or ice covering and are very lightweight.
