Clough Head

-

1 NY322253 Alongside The Sally@Threlkeld (the former Salutation Inn) take a lane running down towards the A66, then a path on the right to the main road. Cross it at an island just to the right, and follow the farm lane opposite up towards Newsham farm.

2 NY330246 As the lane bends left to the farm, take a gate onto open fell. Head up and to the right, beside the trees screening the reopened quarry, then bending right above it. Go through a gate in a fence, and follow the fence up to the Old Coach Road track.

[To avoid the steep snowslope ahead, you would turn left up Old Coach Road for 600m to a stile on the right, for gentler north-east slopes of Clough Head.] Cross the track, with a gate just to the left, and head up a grassy hollow to the col at the back of Threlkeld Knotts.

3 NY330229 Head up to the flat shoulder below the steep Red Screes slope. Now slant to the right up the steep end of Clough Head, on a clear (and in summer rather eroded) old path. It arrives suddenly on the south-west flank of Clough Head. Turn up left to the trig point at the summit.

4 NY333225 Follow gentle slopes down south to a wide saddle, for the slight rise to Calfhow Pike. Visit this rocky little knoll, then head up the wide ridgeline southeast to a slight shoulder (Little Dodd) and up east to the large shelter cairn on Great Dodd.

5 NY342204 Continue north-west 200m to the smaller summit cairn. Descend north for about 200 metres, then swing right (north-east) at a few cairns – if not snowcovered, a faint path starts here. Descend north-east over the slight (but mildly rocky) rise of Randerside.

6 NY348210 The path (now a quad bike track) runs down Matterdale Common north-east, then across the boggy levelling Bruts Moss. When it reaches the shapeless saddle west of spot height 541m, keep ahead for 800m or so along the moorland top, then swing north, down to the Old Coach Road’s stony track.

7 NY368226 Turn left, and follow the clear track for 3km. The track contours around Clough Head’s northeast spur, then slants downhill. Leave it at any point and head directly down rough pastureland towards Newsham farm. Here (Point 2) rejoin the lane you used on the outward route.
