Trail (UK)

Osmotherley to Blakey Ridge

-

SE470994 Begin at 1 the Lyke Wake Walk Stone opposite the car park above Cod Beck Reservoir. Walk north-west uphill to join the Cleveland Way. Turn right and follow the stone slabs north-east to a road. Turn left and at the cattle grid go right into woodland, following a trail until it forks. Take the left-hand trail, passing the monument to Bill Cowley who devised the Lyke Wake Walk (LWW) then bear left at the next trail junction to a gate.

2 NZ481008 Go sharp right before the gate into woodland, following the coffin emblem of the LWW and that of the acorn for a National Trail. Where the trail meets a second go left and follow it to open fields. Go left down the fields along the footpath, crossing a stream along the way, to a minor road leading to Huthwaite Green. Go left through Hollin Hill then straight across at the road T-junction and follow the trail on the right of houses uphill with fields on the left until you reach a gate leading east up through woodland. Do not take the gate straight ahead.

3 NZ493012 Follow the path up through the woods then out of a gate and across the top of Live Moor. Pass the Bronze Age burial cairn and continue across Holey Moor to the trig pillar at Carlton Bank where there are fine views of Roseberry Topping and the coast beyond. Descend from Carlton Bank to cross a minor road, go through a gate and walk past the café at Lordstones, following the trail east up to the viewing point on Cringle Moor.

4 NZ534033 From the viewing point go south-east then east, following the Cleveland Way, and descend towards a forest plantation, bearing right by the plantation corner through a gate then left at the corner of a wall and ascend to Wain Stones. Follow the trail east across Hasty Bank to a minor road. Walk

across and ascend the hillside to Urra Moor, continuing on until you join a shooting track south-east of the triangulation pillar on Round Hill. Walk east along the track until it meets a disused railway line that takes you south-east to Bloworth Crossing.

5 NZ615014 At Bloworth Crossing you leave the Cleveland Way, which heads north, and continue along the disused rail track south-east across the head of Farndale and on to High Blakey Moor. After passing over Blakey Gill look out for an information board on your right giving details of the moor.

Turn left here and head up the moor, aiming to the left of a stone building, finally arriving at the Lion Inn at Blakey Ridge.
