Blakey Ridge to Simon Howe

-

1 SE679997 Walk south along the road from the Lion Inn and take the footpath on the left down towards Overend Farm. When you reach the disused rail track that runs around Rosedale follow it north around the head of the dale then back down the dale on the opposite side until you reach the plantation above Dale Head Farm.

2 SE698998 Take the path running north-east up the left-hand side of the stream. At the top cross the road and take the footpath north-east following a series of stone posts with painted white tops.

3 NZ705010 The next two sections of the walk are infamous for their boot-eating peat bogs! There is a path and in parts wooden walkways, although these are in some state of disrepair in places. The bogs can be deep so take care in choosing a way through. Good navigation skills will also be required, particularly in poor visibility. Turn right at the boundary post and head directly south-east across Rosedale Moor for 3.4km, the way marked occasionally by stone boundary posts, until you reach Shunner Howe round barrow.

4 SE737996 Carry on past the barrow to reach a minor road. At the gate turn left up the road for 200m then go right at the post bearing the

Open Access sign and cross open moorland generally east, following a line of boundary stones. The route eventually turns slightly north-east and reaches the menhir or standing stone at Blue Man-i’–th’-Moss.

5 SE764991 Continue east then southeast past Raven Stones, eventually arriving at a minor road with the sight of the RAF Fylingdales early warning station on the skyline ahead. Go across the road and over the stile, taking care in this area, as there are adders present. Follow the path down to the stepping-stones over Wheeldale Brook and ascend the opposite side, following the path over the stile and across the remains of a Roman road. Walk east up Howl Moor until you reach Simon Howe and the ancient round barrow.

6 SE830980 From Simon Howe you can carry on to Route 12 if completing the 24-hour or two-day crossing. Alternatively, if walking the three-day route, go north, descending Two Howes Rigg, past The Tarn to reach the road into Goathland. Go right and follow the road into the centre of Goathland village.
