Simon Howe to Ravenscar

-

1 SE830981 From Simon Howe follow the moorland path east, keeping to the left of Crag Stone Rigg until you eventually drop down to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway line. The ominous Fylingdales early warning station is a constant companion and point of orientation ahead of you.

2 SE852980 Take care crossing the railway line then follow the footpath across a wooden footbridge and slab path through a gate onto a tarmac lane then onwards to a road. Beware of the busy flow of traffic along the road. As the lane meets the road go left by the bridge and cross the stream then step up to the road and cross to the track on the other side. Take note of the MOD warning signs. Go through the gate and follow the footpath east, keeping to the southern bank of Eller Beck until the waters fork.

3 SE866983 Cross the ford and follow the Little Eller Beck east for 2.1km until you reach a gate leading onto a track running north-south. Cross the track and walk straight ahead up to Lilla Cross on Lilla Howe.

4 SE889986 From the Lilla Howe cross walk north-east then east across High Moor and passing Burn Howe. Keep to the left-hand track until eventually you start the steep descent to Jugger Howe Beck. Cross the wooden footbridge then go right then left up the steep nose of Jugger Howe Moor. A track at the top leads you onto a concrete road and the A171.

5 NZ945002 Go through the gate and across the minor road then through the gap to the A171. Take care crossing this major road. After crossing take the footpath straight ahead in a north-east direction for 2.5km until you arrive at the Ordnance Survey triangulation pillar and the communications mast. The trig pillar (below right) marks the end of the challenge walk.

6 NZ969011 Walk a little further on and just before reaching the road on your right you will find a second Lyke Wake Walk Stone. From here turn left down the road and take the footpath first right down the field to a minor road. Turn right along the road and at the next junction turn left and follow the road to the National Trust visitor centre. The traditional ending for the walk continues on to the bar of the Raven Hall Hotel in Ravenscar.
