NY433183 Follow the road on over Howegrain Beck, to Dale Head farm. Turn right on a permissive path above the buildings, to join a rising green path. In a few more steps bear left – a stony green track runs above the fellfoot wall.

NY431164 The track runs up Bannerdale, remaining just above the valley floor. After 1.2km keep ahead off the green track (which bears left through a field gate). The path moves about 50m to right of the wall to avoid a swampy area. As the wall rises up the fellside the path rejoins it, to level off below the tree-sprinkled Heck Crag.

NY421151 As the wall bends downhill, the path slants gently upwards across the steep slope below the crags, becoming narrow and airy. It rejoins the wall to slant up to the ridgeline behind the crags, passing through a small col to a sudden view of Angle Tarn.

NY419143 Drop to the big path just below. Turn left, southeast – soon you can divert up left off the path over the grassy crestline of Satura Crag for Bannerdale views, rejoining the path at a complex getting-lost col. Follow the main path ahead to the corner of a broken wall. Take the clear right-hand path, contouring south-east around the flanks of Rest Dodd and across a wide saddle onto steeper slopes of the Knott. The path slants up leftwards. Where it passes through a broken wall, turn up right to the Knott’s top. 5 NY437126 Head down a wide path left of the wall to a col. Turn right on the wide stony path you left earlier. It runs along the top of steep drops above Hayeswater, along the narrow ridge Riggindale Straits. Follow a wall along the crestline ahead, to the trig point on High Street.

NY440110 Return along Riggindale Straits, and keep ahead up the gentle rise (no path) to the cairn on Rampsgill Head. Another cairn just down left has views down Martindale. Keep north-east through the next shallow saddle, joining a wide path. This passes along the tops of the drops to left, but the cairn of High Raise is in stony ground just up right.

NY448134 The wide path runs down north to a fence with gate, but follow the fence down right a few steps to a stile at its corner. The wide path runs ahead, to left of a wall, down the wide ridgeline. After a gate in a fence, the path moves left, keeping to right of soggy ground. Follow a fence on your left along the ridgeline of Red Crag. The ridgeline fence then bears down left, to a stream top (Mere Beck) and a path down the left-hand slope. 8 NY451160

The path runs down to right of Mere Beck, then turns right to slant down across the slope to the col east of Gowk Hill. It crosses a beck just beyond, and heads down beside it to a ruin. Here it re-crosses the beck, and works left around the head of Fusedale to join the ridgeline beyond. It heads down the ridgeline, north, keeping to left of the crest and of a wall.

NY441177 At the lowest point of the ridge, the path slants away down the left-hand flank. Here you can leave it to head up to bag Pikeawassa, the summit point of Steel Knotts. Then turn down left, to rejoin the path. This steepens, slanting down north-west. It turns down downhill, then slants down as before, to arrive just above St Martin’s Church.
