Alpkit Soloist £120
Costing less than half of some of its competitors, the Soloist is a favourite of budget-conscious, bargain-loving backpackers. You certainly get a lot of bang for your buck with this two-skin tent, which strikes a good balance between weight, functionality and durability.
It can be pitched outer first or outer only, but inner first is the usual approach. A single central pole, which forks into a wishbone shape at each end via a hub connector, creates a freestanding structure onto which the inner is suspended.
Over this goes the 20-denier, siliconecoated, 3000mm hydrostatic head rated flysheet, providing 3-season waterproofing.
For rougher pitches, an optional 128g protective, 5000mm-rated footprint is also provided.
There is a front porch big enough for your bag and boots, a double-zipped door and a large vent for preventing condensation. Internally you get a stash pocket and hanging loop. And while it’s not as spacious as some, the pole configuration maximises volume. Pretty remarkable for just £120.
IF WE’RE BEING FUSSY Headroom is narrow, due to the lack of a cross pole to widen the peak, and thus the side walls feel more restricting than the tent’s width would imply. It’s not particularly long either, and the door has a tendency to shed any water onto you as get in or out. ■ INTERNAL DIMENSIONS (LxWxH) 200x95x95cm
■ PACKED SIZE 40x14cm
■ WEIGHT 1328g (inc footprint)
Verdict
It’s not as advanced as other options, but this lightweight, 3-season tent is undoubtedly a bargain.
