SK231815 From the centre of Hathersage go west along the A6187, then left along the B6001. As you proceed down the road you will pass the cutlery works of David Mellor, which is well worth a visit.

SK233806

Just before reaching the River Derwent, go left along a tarmac lane, eventually bearing right, before a house. Go through a gate and follow the river downstream, over fields then through a wooded area until you cross a small brook. Bear left uphill, to exit the woodland onto open fields. Go left and walk across the bridge then straight ahead over rough ground to a wide track. Turn right and walk until you have passed a row of houses on the right and reached a gate.

3

SK246789 Padley Chapel is ahead. Turn left before the gate, walking uphill to a wall corner. Turn left to the foot of a very steep incline. Ascend, then go left past the stone structure and follow the trail north, through Bolehill Quarry, on to the A6187. Turn right, cross the road and follow the finger post along a track for 20m then go sharp right up a bank, over the low wall at the top, then follow the footpath across moorland to Surprise View car park.

4

SK251801 Leave the area by the north gate and walk up the rocky path, passing the large boulder of Mother Cap on your right. Bear north-east across the outcrops of Over Owler Tor and Winyards Nick. Keep north-east and descend to the corner of a walled enclosure. Bear left along the south-west facing wall, then turn north-east at the next corner to Higger Tor. Take the defined path up the face of the south-west edge. At the top bear right along the edge, then turn left and pick up the path along the eastern edge. At the end descend the steps and follow the path north-east to Upper Burbage Bridge.

5

SK260829 Cross the road and immediately take the footpath west on to Stanage Edge. At the triangulation pillar go north-west, past the cave marked on the map as Robin Hood’s Cave, until the path meets a fence and stile just above the wooded plantation. After crossing the stile, walk on 150m.

6

SK239844 Turn sharp left, following the stone setts downhill, through the trees, onto a minor road. Go left for 60m, then through a gate on the right, down a track through woodland, to a second gate onto open pasture. Bear right, following the well-defined path past the remains of an old chapel, finally descending through a gate to a stream. To your right, up the stone steps is a wonderful wild swimming spot.

7

SK232837 Go left, follow the footpath downstream to the minor road. Go left along the road and take the footpath on the right, down a narrow, walled lane to a wide track. Turn right, then bear left, following the public path south, around a farm. As you leave the farm boundary maintain a southerly direction for 400m keeping the hedgerow on your right at all times. Then go right, across a track and head southwest, following the path down the field, then following the next hedgerow south-east, across a stream, to the churchyard. Go through it, following the church lane down to a road.

8

SK234817 Go right to reach the Scotsman’s Pack Inn. Then follow the road down, turning right at the junction to return to Hathersage centre.
