Helly Hansen Vanir Hybrid £100
+ Stretchy, comfortable, breathable - Only one leg length, a little loose around waist
The Vanir Hybrid pants are closefitting outdoor trousers designed for ‘comfortable movement in variable conditions’. However, we’d say they’re best suited to active use in warmer weather, with two different lightweight fabrics employed in a hybrid construction. Durable nylon has been placed in highwear areas, with a wicking polyester elsewhere. Both contain plenty of elastane, resulting in four-way stretch throughout the garment for unrestricted freedom of movement. This is further helped by a gusset crotch panel, enabling some pretty impressive leg lifts. The drawback to all this panelling is that there are quite a few seams, which do not affect comfort but could be potential wear points. And while the cut is generally excellent, we did find the waist a little loose. The women’s version lacks belt loops but has an internal drawstring to help prevent any gaping. The zipped pocket at mid-thigh accommodates a phone but not much else, and the secondary zipped waist pocket is also of limited use. But we were big fans of the drawcord hems that allow you to cinch in the ankles, giving a close and neat fit over boots or trail shoes. We were also impressed with the wind resistance of such a lightweight fabric, which also dries quickly.
