Newlands Round

-

NY218208 Descend carefully south-east off Causey Pike, which involves some easy scrambling. Continue south-east down to Sleet Hause and east to Rowling End. Descend north-east past Ellas Crag before veering sharply right down to the road. Turn right and walk beyond Rowling End Farm. Turn sharply left through a gate and take the footpath initially north. Cross the farm’s driveway, go through another gate, head east through a field and cross the Newlands Beck footbridge. Ascend briefly to reach Ghyll Bank beyond a gate. Turn left on the road briefly and turn right through a gate. Head north-east through a field and cross a stile over a fence. Continue north-east through a few gates and past a few houses to reach Skelgill. Turn right on the road and veer left through a gate. Follow the road northeast to the northern tip of Cat Bells’ ridge. Just beyond the Cat Bells car park, turn right and head east on a clear path. Ascend gently east before veering south at the ridge’s nose. Climb the popular path up Cat Bells, with a few sections of easy scrambling. Climb steadily south-west to Skelgill Bank and beyond to a col. Ahead is a final steep ascent before emerging at the summit.

NY244198

Descend south off the summit, veering slightly left to avoid a little craggy section. Continue descending on a wide path to the col at Hause Gate, where four paths meet. Go straight ahead and ascend gently south and then south-west on a well-trodden path. As you near the end of the ascent, veer right slightly to enjoy the views from the top of Bull Crag and to tick off Maiden Moor’s

summit.

Descend south on a good, grassy path, with steep drops to the Newlands Valley, right. Arrive at Narrow Moor col and fork right onto the lower of two paths. Ascend south up the ridge as guided by a few large cairns, skirting to the right of High Spy’s north top. Continue south over a broad ridge before an easy final climb to the cairned summit of High Spy.

NY234162 Descend south and southwest on a good path over rough ground that leads all the way down to the beck to the east of Dalehead Tarn. Cross at the point where the path meets the beck and pick up a stone-pitched path that climbs south-west to the edge of the tarn. Veer right past some old walls and skirt to the north of the tarn. Pick up the path ascending north-west over rough ground towards Dalehead

Crags. Veer left and head south-west up Dale Head’s north-eastern ridge to arrive at the lofty summit.

NY222153 Descend north-west on a good path along Hindscarth Edge to reach a wide col. Fork right and climb easily north on a clear path to the summit of Hindscarth. Descend south on the shoulder for 300m and veer southwest and then west on a narrow path that cuts a corner, dropping down to the col at Littledale Edge. Ascend gently along a fence, sticking safely to the right of the precipitous Robinson Crag and Hackney Holes, before turning north to climb easily to the 737m top of Robinson. Pick up a path descending south-west over steep terrain, before veering west over flatter, boggier ground to Buttermere Moss. Turn left off the path and head west towards the hump of High Snockrigg and find somewhere to wild camp.
