A weekend in Beddgerlert

Snowdonia’s most picturesque village lies among stunning peaks, making it the ideal base for those in search of panoramic views.

- MATT JONES

The picture-postcard village of Beddgelert draws plenty of tourists, attracted by its pretty setting at the confluence of the rivers Colwyn and Glaslyn, and its wealth of amenities, including a famous ice cream parlour and no less than four excellent inns. Many visitors are also intrigued by the legend that the village is the final resting place of Gelert, faithful hound of Prince Llewelyn – the last Welsh Prince of Wales. But for hillwalkers, Beddgelert’s principal attraction is its proximity to some truly splendid mountains – Snowdon itself, of course, but also its outlying peak, Yr Aran. Craggy Moel Hebog overlooks the village too, while to the east lies noble Cnicht, the ‘Welsh Matterhorn’. A weekend break spent bagging all three peaks would be an unforgettable Snowdonia adventure.
