Rab Kangri GTX £280 -

-

Excellent HH rating, well-priced, good features

Stiff and rigid feel, baggy cut

Falling in the mid-range of Rab’s waterproof offerings – cheaper than the premium-end Ladakh and Latok, but far superior to the budget Downpour – the Kangri GTX ticks all the boxes at a relatively affordable price. An impressive 28,000mm HH, courtesy of the 3-layer construction and Gore-Tex membrane, effectively keeps you dry, while the 70-denier materials feel reassuringly hard-wearing. The hood, which features a wired and laminated peak, is adjustable for a tailored fit. Fleece lining in the collar and a soft chinguard further boost comfort when the hood is up. Large two-way pit zips enable easy venting and overall breathability is decent. Wrist cuffs can be sealed via Velcro straps, and waist and hem drawcords enable quick, one-handed adjustments (although the internal waist drawstrings are fiddly to do when you’re wearing the jacket). You also get two large hand pockets and an internal pocket. The YKK AquaGuard main zip is water-resistant with an internal stormflap to prevent water ingress. The overall fit is on the baggy side, which is good for layering but may feel a little bulky and cumbersome for some. Similarly the sturdy construction is a tad rigid and stiff, but ultimately this is needed to block out the rain.
