■ 77 teams operate across the UK, with 12 in the Lake District alone. ■ There were only four days in 2018 and 2019 when MREW (MR England and Wales) were not called out. ■ 14% of MREW call-outs in 2019 were attributed to simple human error. 11% were attributed to poor decision making and another 11% to inexperience.

■ Despite so many people staying home, there was an overall increase of 107 callouts in 2020 compared to 2019. The Peak District had 205 more incidents than the year before. ■

In 2019, SMR (Scottish MR) had 672 callouts, of which the helicopter performed 64 rescues and 109 evacuations. In the Alps, 90% of rescues are performed by helicopter. ■ On average, each rescue costs £2500. ■ Eight team members are needed to carry a standard Mountain Rescue stretcher.
