Angle Tarn

DAY 1 1

NY285060 Park responsibly using public car park facilities provided. Drop a note into the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel or similar to confirm your car will be left there for two nights. Think about water for your night ahead and following morning – where to source? Head around Middle Fell Farm on well-signposted public Right of Way, heading generally west into the wide valley of Mickleden. This is part of the Cumbria Way. Your route follows north-west along Mickleden Beck until you arrive at a junction of rivers and paths.

2

NY261073 Once a footbridge is reached here, take a well-marked track towards Rossett Gill, gradually heading uphill at first, but then forever steepening on a pitched path as you near the gill itself. Admire the impressive amphitheatre of crags around you, including the Great Slab and Bowfell Buttress and the Langdale Pikes behind. At the head of this path, as the ground flattens again, you have some decisions to make, including obtaining water if you need. To take in the Wainwright summit at Rossett Pike, turn back on yourself to the right for a few hundred metres, and a little more height gain to a rocky prominence with a fantastic view back down Great Langdale.

NY249075

From Rossett Pike, retrace your steps back to the col. You are now near

Angle Tarn (potential camping spot if more shelter is needed), but if the weather is fine/wind is low, and you have water for overnight and tomorrow morning, head up to NY247073, which offers a grand lookout and camping spot.
