Sleeping mats
An integral part of your sleep system whether you’re bivvying or backpacking, a decent camping mat will prevent sore hips and stiff shoulders while helping to keep you warm.
TYPE
Closed cell foam mats are relatively cheap, lightweight and durable, but not particularly comfortable. Selfinflating mats (SIMs) have foam insulation, and strike a good balance between warmth, comfort, durability and price. Air mats are comfortable and lightweight but usually only suitable for warm-weather. Insulated versions are available but tend to be expensive.
WEIGHT
When you’re carrying all your camping gear, weight becomes a key factor. Of course, you might be prepared to carry a few extra grams for the sake of added warmth or comfort. Also consider long-term durability – ultralight gear can be fragile.
R-VALUE
This rating is a measure of thermal resistance. Basically, the higher the R-value the warmer the mat. For UK use, a rule of thumb is to compare R-values to seasons. So, a mat with an R-value of 2.0 should be broadly suitable for 2-season use, while a mat with a value of 4.0+ should work for year-round adventures, including winter camps.
PACK SIZE
Bulky mats take up valuable space in a pack, so look for a mat with a compact packed size – but remember to balance this against other factors like the mat’s overall dimensions, warmth and durability, as well as its price.
DURABILITY
If an air mat is punctured it becomes unusable – though many come with repair kits. Self-inflating mats are more durable, though are bulkier. Closed cell foam mats are very hardy, providing warmth and comfort even if ripped or torn.
EASE OF INFLATION
Most air mats now have a pump bag to inflate them, which saves time (as well as your breath!). This is sometimes bundled with the mat or integrated into the stuffsack. It’s generally a good idea to use them, since they prevent moisture from your breath getting inside the mat, which can cause mould and mildew. Remember that even self-inflating mats also require a few top-up breaths to inflate them fully.
