TRAILS TO TRY
West Highland Way
The West Highland Way runs for 96 miles from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow to Fort William, which lies under Ben Nevis. The route is very popular and can get very busy during the main summer months, so accommodation gets booked up early in the year. The route is predominantly a low-level walk, but it winds through several lofty mountain ranges and passes through countryside parks, along a good stretch of Loch Lomond and across open moorland. The route is normally completed from south to north because the southern stages are easier, and this will give you time to get fit for the more demanding northern sections. The West Highland Way follows mostly good paths and tracks including several sections of an old military road, but be warned – some of the going can be quite rough. Although you will find yourself in hidden glens and amongst barren moors where the way seems lonely and remote, you aren’t usually too far from a road and an exit point if you need one. Accommodation is good and there are several baggage transfer companies that service the route.
