HOW STEALL FALLS FORMED

STEP 1: During the Ice Age, a massive glacier formed in Nevis Gorge and smaller ones in the streams that feed it, such as Allt Coire a’ Mhail.

STEP 2: The mass of the Nevis Gorge glacier gives it enormous erosive force and it carves out a deep U-shaped valley. The smaller streams are less erosive and make shallower valleys.

STEP 3: When the glaciers recede, the Allt Coire a’ Mhail, which once flowed into the Water of Nevis, now flows over the edge of the sheer cliffs carved out by the huge Nevis Gorge glacier in a 120m high waterfall.
